The Importance of Mental Health
2025-02-02

For too long, mental health has been stigmatized and neglected in comparison to physical health. However, it is an integral component of overall well-being. Conditions like anxiety and depression can be debilitating, affecting one’s ability to work, learn, and relate to others. I remember struggling with anxiety during my second year of college, and I kept telling myself to just push through it. I thought it was just stress, that everyone felt this way. But it wasn’t until I finally talked to a counselor that I realized how much I had been suffering in silence.

Promoting mental health awareness, ensuring access to professional support, and creating environments where people feel safe to discuss their struggles are crucial steps. A few years ago, a colleague of mine took a leave of absence for burnout, and the way some people in the office talked about it behind her back was disheartening. They called it a vacation, as if recovering from mental exhaustion was the same as lounging on a beach. That experience made me realize how far we still have to go in terms of understanding and empathy.

A healthy society must recognize that mental care is not a luxury, but a fundamental human need. I’ve started being more open about my own mental health with friends and family, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Many of them have shared their own struggles, and it’s created a support network that I didn’t know I needed. We check in on each other now, not just with a casual “how are you,” but with real questions about how we’re actually doing. It’s a small change, but it makes a big difference. Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body, and there’s no shame in asking for help.
